About two weeks ago, with Mrs. Putman's help, we put up five new bluebird boxes that were made by the Young Ornithologists last year. Next week we'll show you a picture of the old boxes vs. the new boxes. Also next week you'll notice we will be writing our blog not Mrs. Parker :)
We started by learning how to monitor the nest. We are always respectful because we are in their habitat not ours. We walk a different way each time so we don't make a path. We knock gently and make sure we are out of the path of an adult bird who might want to escape when we are looking in. We have data sheets that we keep track of the quality of the nest and how many adults and young we may observe.
Box 1, 3 and 5
NOTHING. Not a speck of anything! They are as clean as when we first put them up!
Box 2 and 4
Can you believe it? Box 2 has two eggs. SG commented that they were very shiny like they had just been laid. Mrs. Parker said there are usually between 3 and 5 eggs at a time. So... we are hoping for more. We all decided we would research how long it will take for them to hatch. Box 4 has a full nest but no eggs. We are keeping our fingers crossed. |
