Over the summer at my beach house I saw lots of Mallard Ducks. I have seen them in the canal that is behind my house. It is easy to tell the difference between a girl and a boy duck, the boys have green, shinny necks and a girl is all brown. We aren't allowed to feed them because it is a Delaware law. We have some really good pictures of them that I hope I can post here soon. We also see a great Blue Heron. It is amazing! JM Mystery bird at the beach... what do you think? JM
I chose to send in this picture because I thought it was pretty cool that I could photograph a bird taking off. It took me lot of photos to succesfully capture a bird in flight. This is a female cardinal that I got on film. It took a lot patience to have this bird finally show up. I had to be very careful. It would take off at the slightest disturbance. My class is debating whether this is a Song Sparrow or an American Tree Sparrow. What do you think? This is your new blog post. Click here and start typing, or drag in elements from the top bar.
I had a ton of birds visit my balcony for some grub to feed themselves. Surprisingly, i had soooo much more red cardinals than the common sparrow dudes! Also, i had a strange bird that is brown with white stripes. I also spotted these weird birds that are brownish tan and have a green or red tuft that is on the top of their noggins and have brown wings. I guess i wrote enough so bye 'till next time so adios and the horse you rode in on! DY
Hi! I'm Mrs. Parker and I am leading the Young Ornithologist Instructional Seminar. I'm hoping I will get to add my two cents here and there but I really want the ornithologists/citizen scientists to write about what they have learned. I want this to be a space where their love of birds will shine through.
We were supposed to start with the Great Backyard Bird Count (February 12-15) but we are currently snowed in with school canceled for at least the next two days with the promise of more to come. My Plan B is to still do the count but after we get back, hopefully they will still take our totals. We'll keep you posted. On a happy note, on our last bird watch we saw a hawk. A hawk that we are still trying to determine. I'm wondering if it was a Red Shouldered Hawk. Adult Description

The Citizen ScientistsWe are a group of 5th grade students that are studying birds. It will begin with the Great Backyard Bird Count and end with monitoring the school's bluebird boxes. All of our data will go to the Cornell Ornithology Lab. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/ Archives
